Keith Haring’s Streetart

One of the main graffiti, street and pop art artists of the 80s was the American Keith Haring. His loose and cartoony style is distinguished by the use of coarse lines, vibrant colors and compelling social and political messages. Herring composed his work mostly around central themes such as war, racial segregation, birth, death, drugs and sexuality. His fundamental idea behind this was that art should be accessible and available to everyone, and not just to the elite. Keith Haring therefore also created a lot of graffiti art in public places. He also focused on decorative arts on for example T-shirts and vases, which he sold for relatively low prices.

Development of Haring

Haring was born in 1958 and already demonstrated his interest in sketching and art at an early age. From the age of eighteen he was taught at the art school in Pittsburgh, but because in his opinion it put too much emphasis on the commercial side of art, Haring stopped after two years. Shortly thereafter, he moved to New York, where he studied at the School of Visual Arts and developed even more as an artist. New York was his workplace in the late 70’s and early 80’s, and a constant source of inspiration.

Worldwide graffiti art

An especially major influence was the graffiti art that Herring came across in the New York subway. Following in these footsteps he began creating art in streets, on the subways and on buildings. Haring did not limit himself only to New York. In 1984, the artist traveled to Australia for example, to create murals in Melbourne and Sydney, and his street art can also be seen in Amsterdam, Paris and Pisa. From the early 80’s his drawings and paintings were exhibited worldwide. Late 80’s Keith Haring was diagnosed with AIDS. He died in February 1990 at the age of 31.
