Julian Opie

Julian Opie is a British artist who has mastered multiple disciplines and has build a versatile body of works, including designing the artwork for an album of the British pop band Blur and creating led projections for a U2 tour. Besides this he is has also created a large collection of sculptures, portraits, paintings, drawings and animated visual and audiovisual artworks. He combines his knowledge of the history of art with the use of new technologies and his obsession for the human body. An idea is usually drawn up in several different ways and techniques.

New British Sculpture movement

Opie (1958), who was born and raised in London, belongs to what is known internationally as the New British Sculpture movement. This movement of sculptors, visual artists and installation artists made a name for themselves in the 80’s with remarkable exhibitions in London. Julian Opie studied art at the Goldsmiths College, which is part of the University of London and graduated in 1983. During his studies his sculptures were already frequently on display in exhibitions in England and abroad. Opie himself is very modest about his art and in his opinion, creating something that looks realistic is the only reference point you can be fairly sure of.
